The 6 Thinking Hats

The 6 Thinking Hats

The 6 thinking hats are a fantastic tool to use in your businesses when it comes to making the decision processes easier and help you feel you have made the correct one.

Not everyone has the skills required to use each hat. That is why it is great to use these hats to represent different people in your businesses and use this to work together in a productive way.

Edward do Bono published the book ‘Six Thinking Hats’ to explain to people this powerful technique. Edward points out that the human brain thinks in a number of distinct ways.

In most business type scenarios or even though out day to day activities, argument as a way of exploring an idea is inefficient. Usually argument is negative and in an attacking type behavior, with no constructive argument or agreement.

In these situations if you were to use the 6 hats approach you would be able to use each different persons skill set and way of thinking to brain storm on different ideas and identify what changes could actually be viable in a more positive environment.

Edward’s 6 hats concept helps you look deeper into an idea and identify potential problems or benefits you may have not normally have thought about.

So when it comes to you making the next decision for your business, try on each hat and see where it takes you.

White Hat: Data, studying the information.
Red Hat: Look at problems using intuition & emotion (gut feeling). How do you think people will react?
Black Hat: identify all the bad points, helps you to see all the negative points to your plan.
Yellow Hat: Positive thinking, focusing on the benefits of the decision and the value in it.
Green Hat: All about creativity. Let the creative juices flow and develop new solutions to problems.
Blue Hat: Process Control, deciding what hat to wear at the right time!
